Here at Dark Cypress Kennels our main objective is to further the success of the Black and Tan breed. Our number one priority is to produce hounds that will tree coons and stay until you get there no matter how long it takes, and what else is going on. We absolutely have to have a dog that stays put no matter what when treed. We expect our hounds to go how ever far they need to, to get a coon treed, and to have a mouth that allows you to hear them over that distance. In this part of Missouri coon are scarce. For this reason we have to have dogs that can get it done in areas with poor coon populations. However, we also want dogs that are quick enough to get it done in areas where coons are abundant. Dogs that can do it in any area are tough to come by, but they exist, and we strive for nothing less. We like hounds that are willing to split tree, but are more concerned with producing a hound that does things in front of the pack rather than away from the pack. They can get by themselves, but should be willing to get it done with/ahead of company too.
Good looks are important to us as well. Our preference is a hound with bench show conformation, a big blocky head, longer than average ears, a lot of black, and a deep rich tan color. While we prefer a dog that looks like that. Looks always come second to ability with us. We will not sacrifice, hunting traits for looks, but feel like we have (and are raising) some pretty fine looking representatives of the black and tan breed none the less.
